Feist-Weiller Cancer Center

Volunteers for the Arts in Medicine program at Feist-Weiller Cancer Center gain valuable experience in a hospital setting. Volunteers are commissioned to take sketches and supplies to patients so they can paint while undergoing treatment. Patients paint individual squares that are combined to form a finished piece of art that is framed and hung on the walls at Feist-Weiller Cancer Center and the hospital. Both patients and volunteers learn about the original artist and the history of their masterpiece.

• Volunteers must be at least 15 years of age.
• A volunteer application, criminal history background check and application for parking registration must be submitted to the LSU Health Shreveport Department of Volunteer Services.
• A Tuberculosis Skin Test is required through the LSU Health Shreveport Occupational Health Clinic located on the eighth floor of the hospital. Volunteers may take this two part test between 7 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Fridays. Depending on the day the test is given, the volunteer must return to the Occupational Health Clinic two or three days afterwards to have the test read. Some areas for volunteer work may require additional blood work.
• All volunteers must attend an orientation program before beginning volunteer service. An orientation checklist must be completed by the unit supervisor.
• Upon completion of all required orientation, volunteers must get an ID badge and parking permit (if needed).
• Volunteers are required to sign in and out at the beginning and end of their shifts in the Volunteer Office.
• All required paperwork must be received by Volunteer Services before being granted clearance to begin.
• Dress code guidelines are set forth by specific areas where work is performed.

The LSU Health Shreveport office of Volunteer Services has a number of volunteer opportunities available, from baby rocking to nonconfidential clerical work to the hospital gift shop.
