Physical and Emotional Well Being After Cancer
Cutting-edge cancer research and treatment have increased the number of people living as cancer survivors. Surviving with cancer and life after cancer poses new challenges to patients, their families, and health care providers. Survivors who live with cancer as a chronic illness may need periodic treatments, and others may experience a long-term remission or cure with few side-effects from their disease or its treatment. Other survivors may face long-term problems that our professionals can help with.
Survivors must deal with the physical, social, emotional, and spiritual changes that may have developed during their journey. An experienced physician and health care team can help cancer survivors navigate these challenges. Sometimes the challenge is a simple question, "Who do I call if I have a fever? My primary care doctor, my oncologist, or my surgeon?"
Other issues are more complex. For example, weight gain and fatigue may go unaddressed because the patient does not recognize the problem as a side-effect of therapy. Other challenges such as sexual relations may be unaddressed because of patient modesty or sensitivity.
During and after treatment, Feist-Weiller Cancer Center patients and survivors are encouraged to discuss their concerns with members of our health care team. Our patients are routinely informed of challenges they might face both during treatment and later during follow-up. We believe in the power of knowledge, and our specialists can suggest ways to address issues before they become problems.
Feist-Weiller Cancer Center patients may request a personalized survivorship care plan that they can take with them to other doctors. Detailed records with dates of treatment, dosages of medications, and surgical history are provided. Screening recommendations for late onset side-effects and disease recurrence are also provided. These personalized survivorship care plans may assist a patient's primary care physician who increasingly assumes responsibility in the ongoing care of the surviving patient.
The goal of our Cancer Survivorship program is to ensure quality for the lives we have fought so hard to keep.
