Feist-Weiller Cancer Center has been awarded status as a Minority-Based Community Clinical Oncology Program by the National Cancer Institute
The Community Clinical Oncology Program (CCOP) was established by the National Cancer Institite in 1983 to ensure that cancer patients have access to quality medical care in their own communities. In 1989, the NCI also approved the Minority-Based CCOP to increase the involvement of racial and ethnic minority patients in research, and to increase their access to the latest advances in cancer treatment, prevention and control.
Community Clinical Oncology Programs provide community physicians the opportunity to work with scientists and investigators at universities such as Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center-Shreveport to conduct National Cancer Institute-supported clinical trials. This collaboration helps transfer the latest research findings to community physicians and provides their patients the most up-to-date cancer care. The CCOPs allow researchers to conduct large-scale cancer treatment, prevention and control studies, which in turn rapidly provides answers about cancer care.
The LSUHSC-Shreveport Feist-Weiller Cancer Center MBCCOP will provide Feist-Weiller Cancer Center patients access to additional National Cancer Institute (NCI) clinical trials to determine the best therapies for cancer treatment, prevention and control with fewer side effects cancer symptoms and therapies may incur. Feist-Weiller Cancer Center has been an active participant in NCI clinical trials for more than 20 years as a member of the South West Oncology Group (SWOG) and the Clinical Trials Support Unit.
A major goal of the LSUHSC-Shreveport Feist-Weiller Cancer Center MBCCOP is expansion of its Affilite Physician network to additional practices in northern and central Louisiana. Affiliate physicians will then be able to offer NCI clinical trials to their patients.
Physicians in Shreveport, and central and northern Louisiana, can participate in the Community Clinical Oncology Programs through affiliation with the Feist-Weiller Cancer Center MB-CCOP (FWCC MBCCOP).
Contact the FWCC MBCCOP Office at (318) 813-1410 for information about becoming an affiliate.
Feist-Weiller Cancer Center actively participates in clinical trials and research for our cancer patients. Newly developed treatments or investigational drugs may reduce tumor size and eliminate symptoms better than treatments currently available.
Patients are asked if they would like to participate in clinical trials to evaluate new cancer prevention and treatment choices. Participation is completely voluntary. Ask your doctor about clinical trials at your visit.
